MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WBTW) - The Marlboro County School Board named Dr. Gregory McCord as its new superintendent at a special called meeting on Wednesday.
Six board members voted for a motion to offer a contract to Dr. McCord, two board members, including Chairwoman Lucy Parsons, opposed the motion, and one board member abstained from the vote.
"I think they [the school board] wanted to have someone that had not been a superintendent in the past," Parsons told News13. "To come and give a fresh viewpoint here."
Dr. McCord is currently an assistant superintendent in Beaufort County.
He spoke to community members at a public meeting at the beginning of the month.
"Just know that I am a student first, advocate always; everyday," Dr. McCord told the crowd. "I am in the present moment. I believe in being visible. I believe in being communicative. I believe in being true about who I am."
Parsons said McCord verbally accepted the job over the phone Wednesday night.
The school board chair said Dr. McCord would have a three year contract that would begin on July 1.
"The board members expressed that they liked his mentoring program, that he's a very nice man, and very interested in becoming a superintendent," said Parsons.
According to Marlboro County Schools, McCord was a principal at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School in Orangeburg for five years.
The district said McCord earned his bachelor’s degree from Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC, and his Master’s in post-secondary education from Cambridge University. He holds an Ed.S degree in educational administration and supervision from Lincoln Memorial University in Cleveland, TN, and a doctorate in educational administration from South Carolina State University.
Parsons put an emphasis on how she hopes the new superintendent will help with academics in the district.
"Improve scores, improve scores, improve scores, and get the buildings in better shape," Parsons said about what she wants to see done fixed in the district.
Dr. McCord has not yet signed the contract for the position.
