SPARTANBURG - A man has been arrested after he allegedly abused and neglected his 104-year-old mother.

Captain Regina Nowak of Spartanburg Public Safety said that 61-year-old George J. Leventis, of Spartanburg, was arrested Wednesday and charged with abuse or neglect with great bodily injury of a vulnerable adult.

According to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a incident report states that a home health nurse called police after she went to Leventis' home and found his mother sitting in her own feces. The woman had open wounds, which contained maggots.

The newspaper further reports that the nurse asked Leventis for his help in cleaning up his mother, but he told her to do it tomorrow because he had to go to a doctor's appointment and for her to leave the residence. The report states that the nurse contacted her supervisor and the supervisor told her to call police and go back to the home.

The Herald-Journal reports that Spartanburg Public Safety, EMS and the nurse arrived at the home. A officer broke out a glass window to get inside the home and found the woman slumped over a couch. The woman was wearing only a short shirt and was wrapped in a sheet. Investigators described the home as "hoarder-like" and said that the woman's mattress was stained with urine and feces were on the carpet and wall of the home.

Warrants obtained from Public Safety allege that Leventis "knowingly" and "intentionally" neglected and abused his mother by failing to provide care, goods and services necessary to maintain her health. As a result, the warrants states that the woman suffered great bodily injury.

Leventis is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center where he is awaiting a bond hearing. His mother is being treated at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, police said.
