A Gainesville, Fla., man was arrested Tuesday after police said he stabbed a man during an altercation at a local motel, Kingstree Police Chief Robert Ford said.

Reben Contreras is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, Ford said.

The incident happened at about 1 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Deluxe Inn in Kingstree. The suspect and the victim were arguing when the suspect stabbed the victim in the back and side. The victim underwent surgery Tuesday and is expected to survive his injuries.

Contreras remains in custody at the Williamsburg County jail awaiting a bond hearing.
