JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) --  Police are investigating a child's death and then a man's shooting that happened Tuesday at a residence on Banks Street in Jacksonville.

Officers responded to the home after they got a report of a child not breathing. They began CPR on the 11-month-old victim and transported the child to Onslow Memorial Hospital.

The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.

Wednesday, Trent Woods Police notified Jacksonville Police that the child's father, a person of interest in the investigation, had taken his own life.

Trent Woods Police Chief Tony Lee tells us the child's father is an active duty Marine.

He was staying with a friend in Trent Woods. That friend called police and told them to go check up on him. When they arrived, the man was driving away. Lee says the man then pulled over and shot himself.

His name is being withheld pending notification of family members
