KINGSTREE, SC (WBTW) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol announced Monday that a second person has been charged in the hit and run death of a high school teacher and coach in Williamsburg County.

L/Cpl Sonny Collins said Kwandeesha J. Taylor, 21, of Lake City was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid in the death of Sonya Burgess.

Daveline Holmes, 37, of Georgetown County, was in court last Wednesday for a bond hearing. Bond was set at $115,000 and she was taken to Williamsburg county detention center.

Charges are reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a collision involving death

Troopers also say that Holmes pulled out in front of Burgess causing her to lose control and overturn.

Also Troopers say that Burgess was ejected from her car during the accident and was lying in the roadway when she was hit.

At a bond hearing Wednesday, Holmes' attorney says she was driving to see her child play basketball and had no idea she hit someone. The lawyer says Holmes didn't know about Burgess' death until she called authorities.

Previous reports that Burgess got out of the car were incorrect, troopers say.

The crash happened just after 6:30 Monday night on Highway 52 near the intersection with Cade Road, just outside the Cades community.

Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight identified the victim as 39 year old Sonya T. Burgess. Ms. Burgess was the coach of the Lady Jags varsity basketball and volleyball teams at Kingstree Senior High School.

Troopers say as Burgess drove south on 52, she swerved to avoid a vehicle headed north in the same lane, overcorrected, and flipped her SUV in the road.

Troopers say Burgess was ejected from the SUV and was struck by a second vehicle driven by Taylor. Troopers say both of the other drivers left the scene.

Coroner McKnight said three children were in the car with Burgess and all were treated and released from the hospital.

Burgess worked for the Williamsburg County School District for the past 13 years, and spent the past decade coaching Kingstree Senior High School's basketball and volleyball teams.
