GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) - A Florida woman accused of asking her children to kill their Pitt County grandparents made her first court Tuesday morning.

Leticia Silva appeared emotional in court as she asked the judge for more time to see her family.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office said the 31-year-old made contact with her children in December and asked them to kill their grandparents.  The grandparents live in Pitt County and have permanent custody of the children.

After investigating, deputies say the children revealed Silva had mailed a knife to be used as the weapon in the crime.

Silva turned herself in at the Pitt County Detention Center Monday morning. She's charged with four counts of First-Degree Solicitation to Commit Murder. If convicted she could face 40 years in prison.

She's under a $5 million secured bond.

Her next court date is set for March 21.
