EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. - A Winston-Salem woman at the center of a Silver Alert was shot and killed by law enforcement in Edgecombe County after leading authorities on a chase, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Around 10:25 a.m. Sunday, the Robersonville Police Department attempted to stop a white Jeep Grand Cherokee on U.S.-64 west. The driver of the Jeep refused to stop and a pursuit began according First Sgt. Jeff Gordon with the State Highway Patrol.

Gordon said the driver continued into Edgecombe County on U.S.-64 where the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies were asked to assist in the pursuit.

At 10:40 a.m., the driver was forced to pull off the road due to a flat tire by the 482 mile marker near Tarboro.

The driver was armed with multiple weapons while in the vehicle. Law enforcement attempted to negotiate with the driver to surrender.

After about an hour of failed negotiations, the driver exited the vehicle, aiming her weapons at officers on the scene. In response, law enforcement shot and killed the driver.

Gordon said the driver was identified as Melissa Anne Jenkins of Winston-Salem.

Jenkins, 60, was the center of a Silver Alert issued on Friday by the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons at the request of the Winston-Salem Police Department. Authorities believed Jenkins was driving a white 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee towards the Manteo area at the time of the alert.

State Troopers Trooper W. R. Bulluck and Trooper S. A. Stone have been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation, which is standard operating procedure in an officer involved shooting.

The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation of the incident.

U.S.-64 was closed in both directions while law enforcement investigated the scene.
