CAPRON, Va. -

A Chapel Hill man with a lifelong devotion to Hampton University was killed Friday when a bus overturned in Virginia en route to an event for high school students at the school.

Doval Emmanuel Watson, 58, of Chapel Hill, was on the bus with six high school students and his wife when it crashed around 7:05 a.m. on U.S. Route 58 in Capron, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.

Two passengers were ejected in the accident. One passenger was flown to Norfolk General Hospital.

The driver of the bus, Larry Brocks, 62, of Raleigh, survived and has been charged with reckless driving.

Watson's death shocked his family. His nephew, Bryan Jackson, said, "My grandma, mom and aunt found out first -- they got a phone call."

Watson was a former president of the Durham-Chapel Hill chapter of the Hampton University Alumni Association, according to current president Gloria Doyle. She said Watson was also active in the St. Paul AME Church in Chapel Hill.

Jackson said four of Watson's six children went to Hampton and he took immense pride in the school in Hampton, Va.

"He always wanted to take kids back and show them that it was a great university," Jackson said.

Anaya said the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to run off the road and overturn into a ditch. No other vehicles were involved.

The bus belongs to Horizon Coach Lines of Seattle.

"We understand that the accident resulted in a fatality," the company said in a statement.  "Horizon Coaches wishes to express its sorrow and sympathy to those impacted by this accident.  The company will do everything it can to help determine the cause of the accident."
