A S.C. Highway Patrol trooper is under investigation on allegations he stole money from an Upstate Fraternal Order of Police chapter, according to the Cherokee County sheriff.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said members of the Lodge 22 FOP asked the sheriff's office to investigate allegations that trooper Jeff Martin embezzled around $2,600 from the FOP.

Mueller said because Martin worked at the sheriff's office from 2003-2005, he asked the S.C. Law Enforcement Division to investigate because of a possible conflict of interest.

The investigation began in early May, Mueller said. A SLED spokeswoman confirmed the investigation began May 3 and is still active, but she couldn't provide additional details.

"L/Cpl. Martin's current status is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation by SLED and our agency's Office of Professional Responsibility," said Lt. Kelly Hughes with the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Hughes said Martin was hired by the patrol in September of 2007 and was suspended May 1st.

According to its web site, The Fraternal Order of Police is the world's "largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 325,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges. We are the voice of those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our communities."
