CHRISTIANSBURG -

Sherri Hamlin knows how to save. "I love couponing," she said. And she's found a new way to save and shop more. "I had a friend message me this whole shopkick thing."

shopkick, a free app that rewards you for going into stores you'd probably go into on your own, might now be her most used app. "You don't have to buy anything at all," she explained. "You just go into a store, open your phone before you walk in the store and once you walk in you get kicks."

When your smart phone is on, shopkick detects when you're in one of its retail partners like Target, Macy's, Best Buy, Old Navy and Toys R Us. Some gas station convenience stores will also earn you points, or what shopkick calls "kicks." You can get more kicks by doing a little work as you browse by interacting with targeted products. "You just scan certain items they have on there for you to scan and you get kicks there as well," Hamlin explained.

shopkick is a rewards program that doesn't require a card, only your phone to rack up kicks you can save up and redeem for big or small rewards. "I've gotten two Target gift cards. You can also get Best Buy gift cards, restaurant gift cards, Coach purse gift cards." It's guilt free shopping when you're not spending a dime.

shopkick is free for iPhone from the App Store and for android from Google Play.
