MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) - Myrtle Beach police arrested a woman Monday night for offering sex in exchange for money.

According to a police report, Kristin Punch, 24, of Myrtle Beach was arrested around 8:30 p.m. on 4th Avenue North and Chester Street.

Punch was taken to the Myrtle Beach jail and charged with prostitution 1st offense.

Captain David Knipes with the Myrtle Beach Police Department said since January of this year, there have been 40 prostitution arrests made.

Rahab's House is a place where women who are struggling with prostitution and other crisis can stay. It's a 9-12 month program that helps women to get their independence back.

Melanie Holmes did ministry at J. Reuben Long Detention Center and worked with many women including some who were charged with prostitution and drugs.

"If they didn't have a safe place to help get them into the direction of change, then they go back to the same lifestyle," said Holmes.

That's why she opened Rahab's House.

Lisa Cosacchi is a former prostitute who is one of the women in the program. She said after her marriage failed, she didn't know where to turn.

"There was a void in the pit of my being and my husband, my ex husband when that failed I just, I just was grasping at anything and everything," said Cosacchi.

She turned to drugs and began selling her body in order to pay for more drugs.

"It is very risky, you don't know who you're meeting up with, you don't know what's going to anger them. They don't care for you because you're putting yourself in a position where you're not respecting yourself, your own body," said Cosacchi.

But another woman staying at Rahab who wished to remain anonymous said drugs weren't the reason why she fell into prostitution. She said prostitution wasn't a choice in her case.

"Lost everything. My family, my marriage, my home, my job I had absolutely nothing left that anybody wanted other then to sell myself so I'd have enough to eat sometimes. I had nowhere to go nowhere to live," said an anonymous former prostitute.

Both women want to get a message to other women who may be struggling with an unwanted lifestyle.

"When you see a girl on the street, sometimes she just needs that hug and say I know what you're going through I know you don't love yourself and you think nobody cares but there are people who care out there who are willing to give you another chance," said an anonymous former prostitute.

The founder of Rahab said they are in need of volunteers.
