More charges for NC dad whose toddler was fatally shot after finding gun

Posted: Updated:

The father of a toddler who died after accidentally shooting herself earlier this month is now facing more charges related to the tragic incident.

Melvin Andre Clark Jr., 19, was already charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the Oct. 19 death of his 2-year-old daughter, Samarri Iyanna Beauford.

Now, police say that Clark tried to hide the gun from them during their investigation, according to a warrant obtained by the Fayetteville Observer.

Clark Jr. was charged Monday with resisting a public officer and failing to store a firearm to protect a minor, which are misdemeanors, the newspaper reported.

Neighbors nicknamed the 2 year old girl, "Coco" and said she was full of happiness and life

Fayetteville Police say Clark, who was charged on Oct. 20, left a loaded .22 semi-automatic pistol under the living room couch, which Beauford found and accidentally discharged.

Investigators said the girl was not breathing when they first responded to the home 2600 block of Graham Road Saturday afternoon.

She was transported immediately to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and police believe EMS performed CPR on the way in attempts to save her.

"The child sustained the injuries due to an unsecured handgun in the residence. We have obtained that handgun," said Cpt. Charles Hunter with the Fayetteville Police Department.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

Samarri's funeral was held on Friday in Fayetteville and her burial was on Saturday at Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville.

Clark is being still held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond.
