SAVANNAH, GA -

Savannah Metro Police say they are questioning a man who reportedly tried to help police apprehend a shoplifter.

Police spokesman Julian Miller says police officers were trying to apprehend a shoplifting suspect in the Walmart parking lot on Highway 17 around 2:30 pm Wednesday.

Miller says a man saw the scene and said he perceived a threat to the officers so the man fired a shot. Miller says it's not known if the civilian fired a shot in the air or was aiming for the shoplifting suspect. That civilian is now being questioned by police.

They say the shoplifting suspect is also in custody. It's not known who the man who got involved is or if he had a permit for the weapon.
