BETHUNE, SC -

An SC mom who served as a volunteer firefighter and a US mail carrier died in a crash on Wednesday morning, authorities say.

Erica M. Broughton, age 26, of Cassatt was named the 2011 First Responder of the Year at Buffalo-Mt. Pisgah Fire Department, which is in Kershaw County.

Broughton died while she was on her mail route around 9 am when her car went off the left side of Highway 1 just south of Bethune and hit a concrete statue on the side of the road, WIS-TV reported.

WIS-TV reported the statue came through the windshield and hit Broughton, who leaves behind a young son  and husband of 3 years, Derek.

"It's with heavy hearts that we report the untimely passing of Firefighter Erica Broughton in an off-duty accident.  Erica was an active volunteer firefighter with our department and has served with the department since 2011," said  Chief Chris Jones of the Buffalo – Mt. Pisgah Fire Department.

Broughton held many fire certifications and was a trained medical first responder.  Erica served in the fire department alongside her husband Derek , brother BJ Marshall, and cousin Jeremy Kennington who are also volunteer firefighters with the department.

"She enjoyed hunting and fishing. Erica was a proud mother who loved spending time with her family. She was a member of Abney Baptist Church where she and her husband was devoted to leading the youth program," her obituary said.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Abney Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Tim Broughton and the Rev. David B. Turner will officiate.

The family will receive friends Friday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff.

Memorials may be made to Abney Baptist Church Building Fund, 5180 Bethune Rd, Kershaw, SC 29067 or Buffalo-Mt. Pisgah Fire Department, 5203 Mt. Pisgah Road, Kershaw, S.C. 29067.
