NEWPORT, N.C. - Police say three suspects are in custody in a Newport home invasion.

36 year old James Alton West, 21 year old Thomas Moss of Henderson, and 17 year old Dequan Malik Bullock of Henderson are charged in the home invasion on East Chatham Street December 7.
All three are originally from the Vance County, N.C. area.

The trio was arrested early Tuesday morning.

Police say, after several days of drinking and partying throughout Carteret County, the three men developed a plan to rob a person of of pills and cash that they thought resided at the East Chatham St. residence. That individual wasn't in the home at the time of the shooting though.

When lawmen caught up with the men, they were were in possession of additional firearms and at least one of the firearms is believed to be the one used in the crimes on December 7.

Moss and West are convicted Felons and have prior criminal histories. Both are currently facing pending charges prior to their arrests on Tuesday. West is facing felony drug and weapon charges in Carteret County. Moss was already wanted in NCIC by Virginia authorities for a probation
violation.

“We were extremely pleased to bring about 3 arrests within 48 hours of this crime, and provide both the victim’s and our citizen’s closure on this incident,” said Newport Police Chief Jeff Clark.

All 3 men are scheduled for a felony first appearance in Carteret County on Wednesday.

Newport Police are searching for two suspects responsible for a Saturday evening home invasion.

Police say it happened at 150 East Chatham Street in Newport. When officers arrived they say they found several victims inside the house suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

“I heard some banging on the window in the back bedroom and I came out and the police were there already. They were hollering get in your house, get in your house,”said one neighbor. 


Witnesses say two unknown black males entered the house through the back door demanding that everyone get on the floor. As the victims got up, one of the suspects began shooting a small caliber handgun. 

Three male victims sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds. They were taken to Carteret General Hospital where they were treated and released on Sunday.  Newport Police say that 2 of the 3 victims are father and son.

People who live near the shooting say this whole situation is frightening.

“ I feel very unsafe. I mean what if a bullet had of came over here. It could have come over here just as well. It’s very scary,“ said a neighbor.

Police say one female, who was inside the home was taken to Carteret General Hospital for observation for a separate medical issue. She did not have any injuries from the shooting.

No items were taken from the residence. A motive for the incident has not been determined.
