SC man cited after hanging dog photo goes viral on Facebook

GREENVILLE, SC -

One person has been charged after a dog was seen hanging from a downtown Greenville condo balcony.

A photo of the tethered dog at McBee Station on McBee Street was posted to the WSPA Facebook page and to several other Facebook pages.  The picture went viral over the weekend.

Authorities started an investigation and charged the dog owner's son, Tyler Smith, with Animal Care-General, a city ordinance.

Heather Vincelette posted the photo on the Greenville County Animal Care Services Facebook page.

It has since been shared more than 700  times and has 336 comments.

"This picture was taken and posted on Facebook today when the photographer caught someone hanging their dog over the balcony of their condo at McBee Station in Greenville, to let the dog use the bathroom on the ground," the Facebook post read.

"The photo is making it's rounds and has been forwarded to authorities, but we're not sure anything is being done. Is this legal?"

When we asked why it took a few days for police to issue a citation, we were told that witnesses did not immediately call police and there was an issue of whether or not the photo was legitimate.

"the first thing we thought of - is it real and if it is real, is it a real dog? What's actually happening in the picture," said officer Johnathan Bragg.

Police received more pictures and an animal control officer returned to the scene, figuring out the photo was no joke and Smith was fined $1,093.

The dog's owner is upset with what happened and says his son does not live with him; he was just watching the dog while they were away.  The dog was not injured and is with its owner.
