HARTSVILLE, SC -

Darlington County Sheriff's deputies and SLED agents were tracking a suspect from a double murder in North Carolina Wednesday morning when authorities and the suspect exchanged gunfire near Hartsville, officials say.

Authorities were checking woods off Highpoint Road near Highway 15 for Michael Teon Brown, who police say killed his ex-girlfriend, a mother of 3 children.

Authorities say 28-year-old Brown, of Hartsville, was hit by one bullet in the incident and was taken to the hospital, but is expected to survive.

"According to initial reports the suspect fired at officers while attempting to flee on foot," said Thom Berry with SLED.

Police say Brown shot and killed 34-year-old Jerron McGirt and 33-year-old Jessica Liriano in their Durham, N.C., home Monday.

The shooting happened just minutes after Liriano put two of her three children on a school bus, WRAL reported.

Investigators say Brown and Liriano used to date.

Police say a child was in the home at the time of the shootings.

Dwight Gill, a neighbor who has lived in the area for about seven months, said, he heard "nine gunshots going off" around the time of the incident.

Florence County deputies will investigate the shooting of Brown since it involved SLED agents.

No deputies were injured, Berry said.

Brown was taken to a nearby hospital.
