GAFFNEY, S.C. -

A Gaffney Middle School student has been disciplined after district officials say he put a small amount of bleach into a cooler containing Gatorade during a basketball game.

Cherokee County School Superintendent Dr. Quincie Moore confirms the incident happened Wednesday during a game between GMS and Granard Middle School. Moore says Gaffney Middle School student admitted to putting about a cap-full of bleach into a seven gallon cooler full of Gatorade.

Moore tells 7 On Your Side students and staff from both schools drank from the cooler, but no one reported being sick from the drink.

"As sad and unfortunate as this situation is we are happy that it wasn't any worse," said Dr. Moore.

Dr. Moore says the student and three student witnesses have been disciplined over the incident, but she wouldn't detail the punishment.

Dr. Moore says most times team managers or trainers prepare drinks for players and cheerleaders. Now the district is reviewing those procedures.

"We will make sure we have oversight now, make sure we have procedures in place and that adults are supervising to ensure this doesn't happen again," said Moore.

Moore says she wants to meet with county principals and athletic directors first to craft those changes.

"I think the things that we put in place will be handled from behind the scene because it will involve the preparation prior to the game," said Moore.

A report was filed with Gaffney Police according to The Gaffney Ledger, but the officer notes no one has reported any health problems from drinking the Gatorade.

Dr. Moore adds she has met with the middle school athletic director and principal. Guidelines for dealing with such situations will be set up for the future.

Moore says as soon as a parent reported the incident the district took additional measures to keep students safe. They held meetings for parents from both middle schools to address the issue.

The district is also covering the cost of doctor's visits for students who drank from the cooler.

The school district also self-reported the incident to the Gaffney Police and the South Carolina High School League which also heads middle school sports.
