DELRAY BEACH, FL -

A naked man who witnesses described as having "superhuman" strength was shot outside Delray Beach Tuesday night after biting a teenager's face and attacking several other people, officials said.

The incident unfolded about 8:15 p.m. along Military Trail near The Colony community outside Delray Beach, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told WPEC-TV.

Authorities have not released the names of the man or the victims.

Bradshaw said the man first attacked a retired New York City police officer, then chased after a man and his 10-year-old son. The child went to the hospital after being injured while trying to scramble under a gate to get away from his attacker.

The naked man kept heading north on Military Trail and attacked an 18-year-old.

"In fact he's actually biting the 18-year-old in the face. The 18-year-old thought he was trying to eat his face off," Bradshaw said.

According to Bradshaw, the teen used a box cutter in an attempt to fend off the attacker who was described as being about 6-foot 3-inches tall and weighing about 250 pounds. He looked "like an NFL linebacker," the sheriff said.

Arriving deputies were trying to contain the man outside the gated entrance to The Colony at the intersection of South Military Trail and Modern Boulevard. Bradshaw said the man "took a fighting stance" and charged at deputies.

They deployed a Taser, but did not stop the man, the sheriff said. A deputy fired three shots at the man to disable him before he charged at the deputies, according to Bradshaw.

"He's obviously delirious on something," Bradshaw said.

The man, who was shot once in his torso and twice in his lower body, died at the hospital. Officials don't know if the cause was the gunshots, a chemical substance or something else, Bradshaw said.

Deputies remained at the scene late into the night Tuesday.
