VARNVILLE, SC -

The Highway Patrol blamed a traffic death on Thursday morning on icy conditions.

Troopers say a 24-year-old passenger died when a car she was in hit a tree around 2 a.m. Thursday in Hampton County.

The woman who died was 24 year old Tiffani Johnson of Ridgeland, according to Hampton County Coroner Ernie Washington.

Lance Corporal Judd Jones with South Carolina Highway Patrol says early Thursday morning around 2 a.m. in Varnville, a car struck a downed tree on Lento Road near the intersection of Speed Limit Road.

Jones says the 2004 Honda Civic was traveling south when it struck the tree, killing the front right passenger, a 24 year old.

Others in the car were transported to the hospital in Hampton. The 23 year old driver suffers serious injuries, and another 22 year old passenger sustained non life threatening injuries.
