FLORENCE, SC -

The US Geological Survey has reported that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake has hit about 12 km or 7 miles west-northwest of Edgefield on Friday night.

The quake was first reported as a 4.4, but was later adjusted down to 4.1, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake was about 2.9 miles deep when it hit at about 10:23 pm.

WJBF-TV near Aiken reported that they received calls reporting ground shaking coming in from as north as Richmond, Virginia as far south as Savannah and as far east as Spartanburg.

A magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 60 miles from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source.

A magnitude 5.5 eastern U.S. earthquake usually can be felt as far as 300 miles from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 25 miles.
