FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) - The parents of a Florence child who died after being left in a hot car were arrested Wednesday.

According to the Florence Count Detention Center website, Joe Kennedy, 57, and Ruthene Kennedy, 44, were booked into jail around 11:30 a.m. and charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the child as 13-month-old Jeremiah Kennedy. Von Lutcken tells News13 the parents of a one-year-old boy brought a child into a hospital on May 25 after the child was left in a hot vehicle.

Although the child had no visible injuries, he appeared to be suffering from the impacts of being left in the heat.

The Florence County Sheriff's office said the child was left in a vehicle for approximately an hour and a half before being discovered by the parents.

"Through our findings, the cause of death has been determined as Hyperthermia due to enclosure in a vehicle," Keith von Lutcken said.

According the FCSO website, both parents were released on bond later Wednesday afternoon.

The case remains under investigation.
