Derek Kopp

Derek Kopp joined WBTW as the weekend sports anchor/reporter in February 2018 after serving as the sports director at KNOP in North Platte, Nebraska

Sports have always been a big part of Derek’s life from a young age. Whether it was playing them, watching them or attending the games. Derek grew up in Denver, Colorado before attending Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado to play Division two lacrosse. Following a year in Alamosa, Derek headed south to the Bayou to attend Louisiana State University, Geaux Tigers!

While at LSU Derek served as a sports anchor, reporter and producer for the student television station Tiger TV and is an alumni of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. With Tiger TV he had the opportunity to cover each sport LSU had to offer.

Through Tiger TV he interviewed several LSU sports stars and coaches including Alex Bregman, Leonard Fournette, Ben Simmons, Les Miles and more.

While in college Derek held internships with WAFB in Baton Rouge as well as Altitude Sports in Denver. While at WAFB he helped with the popular Sportsline Friday Nite football show, covering high school regular season and playoff football in Louisiana. While at Altitude he served as a production intern and helped with interviewing local players and helping with the Colorado Rapids broadcasts. He also had the opportunity to work with ESPN during their coverage of the World Lacrosse Championships in Denver.

After graduating from the Manship School of Mass Communication in May 2016 Derek made the move to Nebraska. While in the Cornhusker state he helped put together two high school sports special the Endzone show in the fall and Center Court in the winter focusing on over 50 high school athletic teams in the area.

Derek worked state playoffs in Nebraska, helped cover various Nebraska athletic events as well as Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies opening days.

Derek’s favorite sports teams in no particular order are the Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rockies, Denver Nuggets, Green Bay Packers and LSU Tigers.

In his free time he enjoys working out, listening to music, playing video games and big surprise, watching sports.
