FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) – Authorities say a man charged in a gun battle with Darlington County deputies at a car dealership is the same man wanted for stealing a car from a Florence dealership.
Robert Eugene Hendricks, 42, of Patrick, SC, has been charged with shooting at Darlington County deputies when they responded to an alarm call at a Dodge dealership on Monday night.
He has now been charged with stealing two cars from a Florence car dealership. Investigators say Hendricks broke into the Kia dealership on East Palmetto Street in the early morning hours on Saturday and stole a Kia Sole as well as a number of vehicle keys. Later in the day, Hendricks is alleged to have returned to the dealership where he stole another vehicle, a Kia Sorento. The Sorento has been recovered in Dillon County.
A deputy in the area shortly after the Kia theft occurred spotted the car and tried to stop it, but Hendricks led the deputy on a pursuit into Darlington County, according to the sheriff’s office. The pursuit was called off.
Hendricks was captured on the dealership’s video surveillance, according to authorities.
On Monday night, deputies in Darlington County, with help from the Hartsville Police Department, came across several people at a car dealership in Hartsville who fired shots at them. Deputies were responding to an alarm. No one was injured. Hendricks was taken into custody at that time.
Sheriff Tony Chavis has requested SLED to investigate what happened.
