Rain sends smaller SC Christmas tree lighting event inside

Local News

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A chance of rain is moving the annual lighting of South Carolina’s Christmas tree inside the Statehouse.

Because of COVID-19, that means  the public won’t be able to attend in person.

The ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m. Sunday and South Carolina Education Television will show it on air and online.

The governor typically lights the Christmas tree in front of the Statehouse from the Capitol’s steps with hundreds of spectators and several choirs and other performers.

But COVID-19 already cut down on attendance, and the 30% chance of rain sent the ceremony to the second-floor lobby of the Statehouse.
