CALHOUN COUNTY, SC  – One person is dead following an incident at an industrial plant in Calhoun County.

Authorities say the accident took place at the DAK Americas, between Interstate 26 and the Congaree River near Old State Road, on Tuesday, December 6.

Coroner Donnis Porth identitied the person killed as Alton Zeigler, 63, of Columbia. Two people were also injured and transported to Palmetto Health. Porth described the injuries as chemical burns, according to NBC affiliate WIS.

Site Manager Mark Leonhardt told reporters the three workers were doing annual maintenance on a pump that sends the solution used for the plastic through pipes when the accident occurred.

The line was shut down, and investigators are talking to witnesses to determine what happened.

DAK Americans is one of Calhoun County’s biggest employers with about 425 workers. With headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., it produces PET resins and polyester staple fibers, according to its website.
