Troy, AL (WBTW) — The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team closed out the regular season with an 89-76 loss at Troy Saturday afternoon.
The Chanticleers finish the regular season 16-13 overall and 8-10 in the Sun Belt to earn the conference’s eight seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Check back to GoCCUSports.com later this evening when the Sun Belt releases its full bracket following the final day of games.
Troy, which was locked in as the Sun Belt’s third seed prior to Saturday’s game, improves to 22-7, 12-5.
The Trojans jumped out to a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter and held onto that lead for the remainder of the afternoon. Coastal made a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter and managed to cut its deficit to eight points, but Troy ended the game with five unanswered points to bring the final margin to 13 points.
Coastal’s Caitlin Roche led all players in scoring with 18 points. The junior guard had just two points in the first half, but ended the game shooting 7-13 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers.
Alise Davis scored 14 points on 5-8 from the field and 4-6 at the line. Kiara Norman had a career-high 13 points, and Aja Blount was the fourth Chant in double figures with 11 points.
Coastal out-shot Troy from the field 50.9 – 38.8, but the Trojans made four more baskets (33) on 85 attempts. Troy also hit eight 3-pointers and picked up 15 points at the line.
The Trojans were led by the 15 points of Amber Rivers. Japonica James had 12 points, and Janiah Sandifer 11 points.
With little riding on the game’s outcome as far as tournament seeding, both teams emptied their benches. Troy played all 13 of its dressed players and kept all of them under 25 minutes. Coastal played all 12 of its dressed players, and its leaders in playing time were Torrie Cash, Roche and Norman with 30 minutes.
