Former SC trooper arrested after claiming vehicle stolen

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – A former South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was arrested Wednesday for insurance fraud.

According to arrest warrants, Christopher F. Costa reported his 1997 Mitsubishi stolen to the Horry County Police Department in January 1999. He filed an insurance claim that resulted in the collection of an insurance payment of $20,900.00.

Horry County police found the vehicle in a lagoon.

Costa did make a full restitution to the insurance company for their loss, the warrant stated.

SLED arrested Costa for presenting false claim for insurance payment.

Roger Hughes of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety says Cpl. C.S. Costa was a trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol from March 10, 2002 until March 31, 2016, when he resigned. Costa was a corporal in Troop 5, Post D.
