CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Adult Education Center of Horry County is looking to offer opportunities to people who need skilled training to find jobs.
The funding for the center comes mainly through grants, and they are offering free classes for Early Childhood Development and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training this fall. Darlin Jordan with the Adult Education Center has worked in the education system for 16 years and she said the center is more than a place to get a GED. They are also looking to place people in jobs that are needed on the Grand Strand.
Through community assessments, they were able to identify needs for more skilled people. “We have spoken to businesses in our community and they are the ones that say ‘we need child development certifications, we need people prepared for CNAs,’” said Jordan. “They want to reach out, and they want to fill those spots.”
Ronita Hemingway has worked in education for more than 30 years and she said this program is more than obtaining a certification. She said it’s also a place where she’s watched students turn their lives around.
“As a former middle school teacher, some of the students I see come in are students that I’ve taught before,” said Hemingway. “When they were in middle school, they weren’t as successful, but now as adults, they realize they value education.”
The center said, on average, people are placed in a job within a year of getting the certifications and training needed to be a qualified applicant for various jobs. “They want to be here and do something to make their tomorrow and every day after a better day,” said Hemingway.
Registration is happening Thursday and Friday at 920 Crabtree Lane in Myrtle Beach and at 1620 Sherwood Drive in Conway. It is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and you can call 843.488.6200 for more information.
