GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – Elections have been set for a Georgetown County Council seat after a member’s resignation.

A special election to fill the District 5 seat will be held this summer, according to a tweet from Georgetown County. A primary election is set for July 9.

Filing for the seat will be open from noon on May 17 until noon on May 25.

Austin Beard resigned from Georgetown County Council after being accused of not living in the district he represents, breaking both county and state law.

Beard submitted his resignation to the council, according to a report in the South Strand News, on Monday.

The Georgetown NAACP branch held a press conference addressing Beard’s resignation on Tuesday.

Beard admitted that he has never lived at the Magnolia address. The Georgetown County Election Commission board members voted unanimously he is not living at his address of record.
