MURRELLS INLET, SC (WBTW) – Firefighters in Murrells Inlet-Garden City honored the life of one of their own at his funeral on Friday.

31-year-old Robert Shubert died in an off-duty motorcycle accident last week.

Before Rob became a firefighter, eventually working and volunteering with four different local departments, he served a tour in Iraq with the Marines.

“He was a mentor to many, and the number of people here that you see were all either impacted personally by him, or by his reputation,” George Oldroyd, Chair of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire District Board said.

“When you share the risks of the emergency service, there is a bond that is developed that is only explainable to the public by what you see today. The bond is evident,” Oldroyd said.

Rob’s funeral was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Murrells Inlet. Goldfinch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire District at 3641 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, or Fisher House Foundation at fisherhouse.org.
