CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Since 1970 we’ve been celebrating Earth Day in the United States. There are always a variety of activities across the country happening from picking up trash, to pushing yourself to go a little greener in your everyday life.

Monday, in Collins Park, the City of Conway teamed up with the Horry County Solid Waste Authority for Earth Day. There were a variety of games and give-a-ways, like sunglasses that were made from recycled soda bottles.

Kendra Hooks, from the Horry County Solid Waste Authority, says when given the choice of paper or plastic, always go with paper.

“Plastic is, it never biodegrades,” said Hooks. “It never decomposes, so it’s really supper important to either reject plastic or make sure you recycle plastic, cause if you just throw it away, it’s going to end up in a landfill forever.”

Hooks adds that Horry County has a recycling rate of 30%.

“It’s not horrible, but we could definitely do better,” said Hooks. “So we encourage everybody today, to recycle at least one thing, maybe 10, but at least one.”
