A local firefighter is dead after a late-night crash in the Surfside Beach area of Horry County.

According to Horry County Coroner Patty Bellamy, the single motorcycle collision killed Robert Thomas Shubert. Shubert was a member of the Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Department and a former Marine who served in Iraq. He was 31 years old

The crash happened just before midnight Friday at the intersection of Highway 707 and Holmestown Road.

The Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Fighters Association Facebook page says that Shubert was a member of the Axemen Motorcycle club.

“Through this trying time, we will remember Rob as a brother, son, and friend that he was, the moral character he displayed daily, and the courage and conviction to serve his fellow Americans, both at home and abroad.” the organization said on Facebook.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigates the crash.

Memorial services for Shubert will be held Wednesday from 2 – 4 p.m. and Thursday 5 – 9 p.m. at the Goldfinch Funeral Home in Garden City. His funeral will be held Friday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church located at 542 Cypress Ave in Murrells Inlet.
