Start that count down–It’s one week until Valentine’s Day.

Many candy and flower shops are preparing for a busy week of gift orders the week of the holiday.

Todd Canipe, owner of Wee-R-Sweetz on the Grand Strand, has been making and selling candy for more than 30 years. In his family business experience, he’s learned how to handle Valentine’s Day. His store is taking pre-orders for gift baskets, and the always-popular chocolate covered strawberries.

“We get hit the day before, and the day after [Valentine’s Day],” said Canipe.

Abby Smith, the store’s manager, has noticed the trends change for popular Valentine’s Day candy. This year, salty sweet treats are selling out.

“Currently, chocolate covered bacon and salted caramel is a trendy type of candy,” said Smith.

“We kind of have to cater to that, because people come in asking for those things, and if we’ve never made it, we’ve got to give it a shot,” she said.

In the summertime, the popular candy changes from chocolate to salt water taffy, which is how his family business got started decades ago.

Canipe says he continues to work in the candy industry not exactly for money, but for love.

“Seeing how people react to it … it’s just sometimes people just love to have a treat,” he said.

Wee-R-Sweetz has three locations: Main Street and Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach and Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach.

Managers prefer people looking to place orders do so by calling the store and placing the orders over the phone. The phone number to call for pre-orders: 843-272-0891.
