(WFLA) – A Canadian family’s vacation to Florida came to a bizarre and tragic end when their 87-year-old grandfather died in the car and the family drove the car home with his body in the back seat.

The man’s family kept driving home because they did not want to deal with costly American healthcare, according to the Vancouver Sun.

Border agents discovered the man’s body when the family’s car was searched at the Canada-US border in Hemmingford, Quebec.

The Vancouver Sun reported that Fernand Drapeau began to have problems with his health during the beginning of the vacation.

Police said Drapeau appeared to have died from a heart attack. Authorities believe he had been dead for at least one day, the Vancouver Sun reported. However, CTV reported paramedics were called when the man’s body was discovered at the border and paramedics said he had been dead for at least two days.

An autopsy will be conducted.
