NC woman indicted in death of handicapped roommate

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham County grand jury issued an indictment Monday charging a woman with murdering her roommate last month, officials say.

Elena Khanberg, 54, was indicted in the death of 53-year-old Cedric Page after an incident on June 17 last month, said Durham spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

“Officers were dispatched to a call at the apartment the two shared in the 1500 block of Sedgefield Street shortly after midnight on June 17,” Michael said in an email.

When they arrived, they found Page unconscious inside the apartment.

“He had suffered blunt force trauma to his head,” Michael said.

Investigators arrested Khanberg at that time and charged her with felony assault on a handicapped person.

She was placed in Durham County Jail under a $200,000 bond and has remained in jail since that time.

Page died as a result of his injuries on June 25.
