“It’s an epidemic in this country”: A ruck marathon brings awareness for local veterans

Pee Dee

Shawn Laurie started an organization in the Pee Dee in hopes to bring awareness on veteran suicide.

It’s just an epidemic in this country, said Laurie.

Laurie tells News13 he is working to help his fellow vets by hosting a special ’22 for 22 event.

We’re going to a 22-ruck from here and we’re going to circle all the way around. We’ll hit that for 2.6 miles and then come back around. Those who can’t handle the 13 miles, can stop here where the event is going to be, said Laurie.

The ruck marathon will be followed by a rally, food, games for kids, and motivational speakers.

“Everybody is excited about it, especially the national guard. When they found out they said it was a great idea. I feel great about it. I’m glad there’s so many people that want to get involved. I’m blessed, said Laurie.

The event will be held April 6 at the Florence Veterans park, and if you would like to be a sponsor or join the ruck, click here.
