Parents outraged after school board meeting following 5th grader's death

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) The Colleton County School Board met on Wednesday to discuss circumstances surrounding the death of a 10-year-old student following a fight at Forest Hills Elementary.

On Monday, a fifth-grade student was airlifted to MUSC for medical treatment due to issues related to that classroom fight.

That student, later identified as RaNiya Wright, was pronounced dead at 9:39 a.m. Wednesday.

Both the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office and Colleton County School Board launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The school board gathered Thursday afternoon for that special meeting.

Sean Gruber, Colleton County School District PIO briefed the members of the media ahead of that special meeting and invited them inside where members met with prayer, a moment of silence, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and voted to enter executive session.

This means no media cameras or reporters or members of the community will be allowed inside that session.

School board members are expected to deliver a statement following that meeting.
