LUMBERTON, N.C. (WBTW) — Lumberton police said Wednesday evening a 17-year-old boy who ran away after allegedly shooting a 28-year-old woman had turned himself in.

The boy’s name or charges were not immediately available.

Officers were dispatched at about 2:40 p.m. to the 500 block of Crandlemire Road, police said. When they arrived, they found the woman who had been shot. She was treated by EMS before being flown to an area hospital with injuries that were believed to be life-threatening.

Police said the incident prompted Lumberton Junior High School and Knuckles Elementary School to be placed on lockdown because of their proximity to where the shooting happened. However, a spokesperson for the Public Schools of Robeson County said Wednesday morning that no lockdown occurred.

No additional information was immediately available.
