21-year-old Florence woman dies after crashing into a tree in Darlington County

DARLINGTON, S.C. (WBTW) — Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a fatal collision in Darlington County Friday morning.

The single-car collision claimed the life of Candice Gatling, 21, of Florence. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Darlington County Coroner J Todd Hardee.

Around 2:31 a.m., troopers responded to the area of Ruby Road and Stonewall Street, one mile north of Hartsville, for calls of a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol website.

A 2002 Nissan Altima was traveling North on Ruby Road when the vehicle went off the road to the right, striking a tree, according to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell with SCHP.

Gatling was the only person in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt, according to Tidwell.

This accident remains under investigation by the Darlington County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
