A young mother and her 19-year-old friend were killed and another young woman was hurt in a wreck in Laurens County early Thursday morning.

The incident happened as the women were on their way home from work around 4 am on Highway 127 near downtown Laurens .

The victims were identified as Chelsea Calvert, 22, of Laurens and Kayla Stephenson, 19, of Greenwood.  Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Calvert was driving when she ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree near Harper Street.

Calvert was wearing a seat belt at the time.  Stephenson was not, according to troopers.  Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

A second passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Waterloo, was not wearing a seat belt and was airlifted to the hospital.  There’s no word on her injuries at this time.

The women were on their way home from work at the time of the wreck.

Chelsea, who leaves behind a toddler son, was a 2010 graduate of Laurens District 55 High School and attended New Spring Church, her obituary said.

“She loved riding horses and was the 2009 High School Rodeo Queen,” the obituary said.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, at Northside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Billy Cathcart, Rev. Ronnie Blackwell, and Rev. J.D. Putman, Jr. with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. (The family would like for friends to wear rodeo attire, if possible.)

The family will be at the residence, and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary, Saturday, March 21, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Kayla was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and “was a loving and caring friend and sister,” her obituary said.

Services for Kayla will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Hill officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Kayla’s family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
